LineSpell is a new multiplayer word game built around one rule: every word must land in a single straight line — across, down, or diagonal. The board starts full; players slide tiles (they can’t jump what’s in the way) to carve words out of the chaos.
Easy to pick up in a turn or two — but the highest-scoring play is always hiding somewhere, and finding it takes real skill. Up, down, across, diagonal: what will you spell?
Two ways to play. Pass-and-play for 1–4 players on one iPhone or iPad is free and needs no internet — a real around-the-table game. Online play is a single $2.99 unlock with Family Sharing enabled: start a match, share your join code, and take turns on your own time, minutes or days apart. Games never stall — a server-side turn timer nudges, then passes, absent players.
What’s not in it: no ads, no subscription, no coins or boosts, no accounts, no sign-ups, no email address. The App Store privacy label is close to empty — not as a marketing position, but because there is no analytics SDK in the binary. Every online opponent is someone you invited with a code: no stranger matchmaking, no bots, no chat.
Every word is checked against a 173,000+ word dictionary; scores reward letter values and word length; a weekly Word of the Week crowns the highest-scoring word played anywhere.
The straight-line rule demonstrates faster than it explains — and it’s the quickest way to see this isn’t a reskin of the word games you already know. The board starts full; you slide tiles into a single line and take the word off it. Here’s a full turn: slide the E into line, spell DOME, score, and the played tiles clear.

Last summer, on a visit to a friend’s house, I got introduced to Wordsearch, a long-out-of-print Waddingtons board game their entire family was hooked on. I loved it, and I came home convinced the idea at its heart would make a great app. LineSpell is my tribute to that experience, built from scratch and enhanced for digital: slide tiles into one straight line, spell a word, pass it around the table or play online with up to 3 friends. And since it was born at a family game night, I built it the way a family game should work — no ads, no strangers, and nothing to buy beyond the game itself.
